Most professional audio/DAW programs require sound cards or interfaces that run high speed ASIO drivers so you can move huge amounts of streaming data very quickly with low latency, low memory and low CPU usage. They can record high sample rates but they only work with general windows/multimedia applications. Realtec cards are windows cards that use windows drivers. Tascam US-122 USB Audio/MIDI Interface For Recording With Gigastudio 24 | eBay You can easily find something like this in mint condition. I like variety when I record so I don't get in a slump using the same sounds over an over, so I buy used gear on EBay. I picked one of each up for less then $30 each. So do the M-Audio Black boxes if you can find the. In fact one of those Digitec RP-150 pedals have a built in interface and drum machine. Total gear cost with the interface, a mic and modeling pedal was around $150 but you could easily do it at half that cost. I don't bother because I have real drummers who can record the parts on the better songs. The beats a bit boring because I just used a stock beat but you can create your own if you want. The drums were from a Zoom 123 drum machine I paid $25 off ebay. I paid $39 for one of those small Vox Stomp lab pedals and plugged it straight into the interface. All the drive came from a multi effects modeling pedal that lets you select different amps and cabs, reverbs echoes etc. No amps used, this was all direct recording. you wouldn't know it was all being recorded direct.

I use a dual channel DI box and convert two mic inputs to line level and record a stereo drum machine off two channels and I use a stereo modeling pedal to record guitar/bass etc. The units have 4 high quality mic inputs and two instrument/line level inputs. This way I don't have to crank up the entire studio and run my 24 channel unit to record ideas. I use one with my laptop as a mobile recorder and the other as a song writing unit in the living room.

I bought two 6 Channel Tascam US1200 rack interfaces for $80 each with free shipping. you can easily buy one for well under $50 I saw a new Tascam for $29 the other day on EBay. The good news is interfaces have never been cheaper. When it doesn't the temp memory fills up and the program crashes. The converters run off a clock and the clock needs to keep up with the data flow. Sonar would freeze up within 2 or 3 seconds even at 16/44 so its not worth bothering with. The card was seen by the DAW but it was too glitchy to be of any use.

They only added Realtec cards recently in an update but the update is no good.

I even tried using ASIO4ALL which are generic ASIO driver adaptor that's supposed to allows windows cards to be seen by DAW programs. They aren't bad for multimedia but that's it. I have Realtec cards in all my HP computers.

I'd then burn CD's (CD Burners cost $350 back then and recorded at one speed. I had an analog studio then and I'd mix down straight to a computer as a stereo track. You get an 8 or 16 channel version you can record an entire band in a single pass and have everyone on separate tracks. You can do whatever you desire building two tracks at a time on a smaller interface. At the same time the card/interface acts like a mini mixer to mix the playback or tracks with your input so you can play along to those tracks and record new ones. The card splits the signal and writes to the hard drive. you're not worried about what goes on in the background, only when playing back. You hear the sound in real time because you mic is connected directly to the headphones via a preamp.

Pro cards/drivers/programs work together. Even if you could get a recording program to recognize the card, you cant multitrack with it without having major latency and track shifting. All the manufacturers had added the thunderbolt option and all new computers are coming out with it because its a thousand times faster which means lower latency.Īll you can do with a windows sound card is record a stereo track from the line input. I'd stick with USB or Thunderbolt if your computer has it. You don't need to spend allot of money on a high end unit, and especially not a Firewire interface which is likely to be obsolete in a few years. This allows you to hear what you plug into the cards/interface in real time so you can multitrack. Most importantly, pro cards/interfaces use something called zero latency monitoring and have auto track alignment. If I buy a Fireface, is it going to make any difference? Thank you. I'm still using the built-in sound card of my desktop computer.
